The Masks of Mental Illness

NAMI's Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter held a fundraiser at the Jim Rouse Visionary Center American Visionary Art Museum, The Many Faces of Mental Illness Mask Project.

This article in the Baltimore Sun, by Sloane Brown, reported that masks created by artists and professionals were on display at the fundraising masquerade party. The masks represent each artist, business person, health professional or member of the community's thoughts on mental illness.

Derek Savage, NAMI board chair, is quoted to say,
"A lot of people are blown away by the mask display, I don't think they've thought about mental illness and its effect on the people involved. This gives you better insight, a better understanding."

Kudos to NAMI of Metropolitan Baltimore for a fantastic idea. It is only when cities and counties take mental health care seriously at a local level that any reform will even begin to show.

I sure would like to see these masks, but I searched to no avail.

I don't like the "Masks" or the pictures of "Weird" faces that are drawn out - I cannot stand them - I never liked them...I don't care how long they've been around, but I don't think that it represents Mental Illness at all...

These "Masks" is what confuses society, I think.. The so-called "Madness."

I am happy or sad with Bipolar - nothing more!

We have a "Mood Disorder" Not multiple personalities...

I know these "Masks" represents ALL Mental Illnesses, but I don't like them...It is like looking at a scary clown..

They should do away with them!

Wow. The masks provoke emotions on both sides..Dream Writer- Are you speaking of these masks in particular, these masks that were part of the fundraiser for a masquerade party. I think the idea here is to remove masks. I have not seen them...

I don't know - maybe I was thinking of something else or thought "These Masks" were something else...I am basically talking about those common pictures of "Madness" and the different faces within ONE face...I just don't like them at all...They appear "Dark" to me...and we are not Dark....Our personalities are not dark...

A lot of people have them on their blogs - these pictures I am talking about - I just don't like them.

Masks scare me, like clowns, only without eyeballs.

I guess like CP puts it, like clowns.
There are many who associate clowns with fear. I can see how the masks can be associated with some sort of negativity as well.
